Paclitaxel is a monomer diterpenoids extracted from the bark of taxus, a natural plant. It is a complex secondary metabolite and the only drug known to promote microtubule polymerization and stabilize the polymerized microtubule.
Isotopic tracers showed that paclitaxel only binds to polymerized microtubules and does not react with unpolymerized microtubulin dimers.
